If you want to drive online business sky-high, you need the right mix that includes three essential roles. With these three roles handled, ideally by three different individuals, you will build a firm foundation for success.
Each role requires a different mindset. Early stage entrepreneurs often take on all three roles simultaneously; however, it makes sense to build a team of people whose skills complement each other so your company can scale.
Role One: The Visionary
Any business begins with the big picture. The Visionary is conceptual in setting the vision and the big audacious goal. This sets the company’s direction, shapes the business model, and creates buy-in with various stakeholders.
The Visionary role is about ideation, inspiring others to see the potential in emerging opportunities and markets, and telling stories to inspire and motivate employees, investors and customers.
Role Two: The Implementer
To actualize the big idea for your business, you’ve got to implement well. That’s where the Implementer comes in to get stuff done and produce the necessary results. What type of people make the best implementers? They might be engineers and developers in an online business but they can also be administrative support, customer service or even content writers.
The Implementer is about executing, including measuring progress and results against pre-defined metrics of success. Those metrics might be the number of subscribers, clicks, customers or bottom-line financials.
Role Three: The Manager
As vital as it is to have the vision and implementation of the business strategy, it is equally important to manage the company. The Manager keeps all the moving parts operational, changing course as needed to adapt to customers’ dynamic needs and company performance targets.
In this role, the Manager helps monitor individual and team performance, recruit talent and set up internal systems to measure and monitor progress toward targets. The Manager also ensures the financial systems are in place to track cash flow, profit and loss statements, etc.
The Bottom Line
Whatever your business, the bottom line is that your business needs the following:
- A visionary to plan, excite, and sell;
- An implementer who can GSD (a.k.a. get s$%^ done); and,
- A manager in operations and measuring success.
With the right talent in these three roles, your online business is primed for success.
