This is your training overview. In this module, we will cover:
- The elements of your Kartra dashboard.
- What makes Kartra different from other solutions.
- The tagging and automation features within in Kartra.
- Why your administrative profile is critical.
Kartra is not just a shopping-cart system, but an all-inclusive, email marketing, list building, web-hosting, business management platform designed just for marketers! It does all these things – and more – while connecting them all together in a single account for you to manage.
These things are done in a goal-oriented manner, which can be different from many other platforms that focus on tasks. To get more details, check out The Kartra Difference below.
The First Steps – Your Kartra Dashboard
In the image below, you’ll see the main dashboard in Kartra. This is where you will be when you first log in. Here, you’ll be able to see all your most vital stats at a glance, and navigate to any section of Kartra.
In the upper right, you can click the silhouette icon to edit your admin profile. This is important to do first as it sets up your entire platform.
The Left-Hand Menu Categories
On the left of any screen in Kartra, you’ll see the different features available to help you run your business. You won’t need to set all these up right away.
Essentially, there are four key features you’ll want to use to get the most out of Kartra:
- Create a product,
- Upload an email list,
- Create a membership site, and,
- Create a lead-generating landing page.
Let’s look at My Products first.
In addition to the standard ability to add products, coupons and track your sales or analytics, you can also add affiliates to help promote your products! You get to choose what products can have affiliates and what they earn per sale.
But you don’t have to go searching far for affiliates! You can promote your product on our marketplace. You’ll do that by selecting “Activate affiliate program opt-in” during your Product setup process, on the step labeled Affiliates, shown below:
You can use the Campaigns area (marked #1 in the image below) to upload and set up your email lists, individual leads, email campaigns, and tags for individuals on your lists. The tags in Kartra allow you to do some amazing automation.
Set up for your first contacts list by navigating to Leads (marked #2 in the image below) and clicking the green +LIST button on the right.
Kartra comes with a fully-functional page-builder included! You don’t need to use any other page building environments to run your business when you use Kartra.
Under My Pages you can create lead generation pages to host your videos, sales pages and forms you have made.
To make your first page, click the +NEW PAGE button in the center left of the screen, or the green +PAGE button that hovers on the right.
Forms allow you to subscribe your Leads into your database. By directing Kartra as to what actions you would like it to complete, it will assign Leads to lists, offer the ability to automatically tag them and much more.
Below is the Forms dashboard.
- You can create new forms (Marked 1 Below)
- You can see whether it is single or double optin. (Marked 2 Below)
- You can view analytics for each of your forms (Marked 4 Below)
In the My Memberships section, you can create a branded site with different membership levels, and differing content, products and files for each! Using this feature, you can communicate through comments, create a unique helpdesk, automate your members based on behavior, and upload files and videos to members.
To start on your first Membership Portal, click the green +MEMBERSHIP button that hovers on the right side of the screen.
Kartra offers in-house video hosting – with the My Videos section, you don’t need a membership site or any pages built to upload videos for people to watch. Using our video hosting system under My Videos, you can have mobile-ready videos with special features like embedded forms for viewers to become your new leads!
All videos uploaded in My Videos can be added to your membership portals and Pages within Kartra with one click, and you can embed them wherever you want on the internet!
To upload your first video and start embedding it, hit the green +VIDEO button on the right side of the screen.
You can also add a Project to your Videos library, to help you keep your videos organized (marked #3 in the image below).
Your customers can also contact you if you set up a helpdesk. You can not only create multiple helpdesks to answer tickets, but answer live chats, phone and Skype calls, and have canned responses at the ready. In addition, you can add a product wiki to your helpdesk for your customers to browse through to search for answers on their own.
You can also become an Affiliate for the products of other Kartra users! In the My Affiliate Promos section, you can find products you’re interested in promoting, apply to be an affiliate, get set up as a JV Broker (Joint Venture Broker), and track all of your affiliate sales to see which promotions make you the most revenue.
Get to the marketplace by clicking on My Affiliate Promos (#1 in the image below) and then Marketplace (#2 in the image below). Here, you and other sellers can find products you wish to become an affiliate for and earn more.
For all of these amazing features, you can find detailed analytics in each section so you can learn what pages are being visited most often, which emails are the most successful, how your affiliate sales are doing and much more.

The Kartra Difference
Kartra is designed from the ground up to be your one-stop shop for running your online business. But it works a little differently than other applications you may have used before: Kartra is Goal-Oriented as opposed to task-oriented.
What does it mean for an app to be goal-oriented?
It means Kartra wants you to think in reverse – think first about what you’re trying to accomplish, not the first steps. Here’s an example:
Let’s say you want to create a landing page so that you can capture traffic into subscribers. That’s the task you’re trying to get done.
Now think about the goal: capturing a lead. What’s the next thing that happens after you capture a lead? What’s the last step in this whole process?
Well, once your traffic subscribes, and you capture them as a lead, you’ll want them to see a thank-you page, right? That’s the end result of this whole funnel. Kartra wants you to create that Thank-You Page first!
This gets you thinking in a goal-oriented way, because it forces you to consider what the end result is going to be, and start there first. First you make the Thank-You page, then you create your List, then you create your landing page with the subscription box…etc.
Kartra provides numerous opportunities for automation for your contact lists. However, it is important to know the difference between automation and tagging (both of which are available in Kartra). Next, we’ll discuss both and show you the power of automation in Kartra!
First, tagging is something familiar in many platforms. Tags allow you to add specific details to individual contacts in your email list (such as which customers purchased product A, product B or both). These tags can be added manually, or via automation.
To set up and manage your tags, go to My Campaigns and then, at the top of the screen, hover over Leads and then click Tags.
Automation is a set of rules that are automatically applied based on user behavior. Automation can make your email lists and follow-up sequences personalized and detail-oriented without the need for constant attention to those details.
To create and manage your automations, go to My Campaigns, hover over Campaigns and click Automations. You can use the big green button on the right to add an automation, or the +NEW AUTOMATION field on the top part of the screen.
You’ll create a trigger and a consequence for each automation. For example, if a customer signs up for a product, then they will be given a tag as having purchased it.
But you aren’t limited to only one trigger or consequence! You could also have them added to a new email sequence for follow-up about that product, or require that the customer has visited a specific page first in addition to having purchased. This flexibility allows for numerous possibilities in your sequences.
For example, you can remove a new buyer from a leads list and put them into a customer stick sequence, where you provide nurturing, substance and information via emails to support their buying journey with you. With some creativity, you can send an email that gives choices (via a tracked link or a visit to a specific page), and send specific follow up messages based on the choices subscribers make. You can even reward behavior (like watching to a specific point in a video) by unlocking new content in a membership area. The possibilities are almost limitless.
All these things create a highly personalized experience for your contacts while it is done automatically when you set it up that way.
Why Your Administrative Profile Is Critical
Your Administrative Profile is possibly the most important thing you will set up in Kartra. First and foremost, this is where you will find your personal details. More importantly, this is where you set your business details.
Let’s get started…
To get to your Profile, click on the silhouette of a head in a circle that appears in the upper right of every page in Kartra – don’t worry, you’ll be able to replace that silhouette with a photo of your choosing – and click on Profile.
Your Profile is where you’ll fill in the usual details like name, address, phone number, and also update your password – as well as uploading a great looking profile picture! But the reason your profile is so important is because of the information about your business that you will enter here.
Your logo and business name are added here and are used throughout Kartra wherever you choose. For example, when creating an email, you can easily drag and drop your logo without the need to upload it every time!
Next, and even more important for an online business, is the addition of your Sales Tax ID. This number is known in the US as your Federal Tax ID Number or your Employer ID Number (FEIN). If you are in the EU, you may use your VAT (or Value Added Tax) ID Number here. In Australia and New Zealand, the number will be the Goods and Services Tax (or GST) ID. We recommend finding out what tax number may be required in your area for selling goods and services.
Additionally, on the list are fields for your website and social media pages. Similar to your logo and company name, these details can be easily added throughout Kartra such as when creating pages.
With your Profile fully completed, branding your content and communications has never been easier.
